נאוטילוס  דגם נצחי של  פטק פיליפ - כה זה התחיל...

שנת  1976 הייתה באמצע עשור המאופיין בתהפוכות חברתיות, כלכליות, פוליטיות ותרבותיות. רוח של התחדשות שפרצה כדי להתגבר על הרצינות הקודרת של השנים שלאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה. כל דבר היה מהנה והיה גם מותר.  אנשים עבדו לחיות ולא חיו כדי לעבוד. פיליפ שטרן היה נציג טיפוסי של הדור הזה. זה היה סבו צ'ארלס, יחד עם אחיו ז'אן, אשר בשנת 1932 רכשו פטק פיליפ, חברת שענות מכובדת. בשנת 1976, הנרי שטרן היה נשיא החברה המשפחתית, והבן פיליפ, שכבר היה בעל תפקיד בכיר, היה צפוי לרשת אותו.
זה היה הזמן הנכון להציג יצירות , אז הוא החליט להשיק שעון יד ספורטבי בפעם הראשונה בהיסטורית 137 השנים של המותג . בשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם ג'רלד ג'נטה (Gérald Genta) , אחד ממעצבי השעונים המוכשרים ביותר של המאה -20, שעון חדשני החל לקרום עור וגידים, שונה מכל מה שפטק פיליפ בפרט  או בענף השעונים בכלל ראו : נאוטילוס.Ref. 3700/1A . היה מעוצב בשיפועים , עשוי פלדה, למרות שהמגמה הרווחת העדיפה שעונים דקים בזהב. השעון  עמיד במים עד 120 מטר ובניגוד לכל שעון יד אחר,עם  היבט ימי, בהשראת  פיליפ שטרן שהיה קברניט נלהב ומשתתף בתחרות השיט על אגם ז'נבה.
היצירה נקראה בשם נאוטילוס התאמה מושלמת, לחיים תת ימיים וקפטן נמו אותו שיגר ז'ול ורן למסע המסוכן בספרו עשרים אלף מיל מתחת למים.
